📅 On this day in 1959: American Airlines launched the first coast-to-coast jet service, making travel faster and shrinking the country overnight. They’ve been shrinking leg room every year since.

Monday’s Poll Recap

🏥 Home Healthcare Reality Check

This one landed exactly where many of you are living right now: uncertainty.

A clear majority of respondents, over half, selected “Still figuring it out / haven’t faced this yet.” That alone says a lot. Many Villagers know this conversation is coming but simply have not had to make the call yet.

Among those who have faced it, the top choice was short-term in-home care. Flexible, familiar, and easier to scale up or down as needs change. Family and friend rotation came next, showing how often care still starts informally before professional help enters the picture.

More structured options like private companions, monitoring technology, and adult day care trailed behind. Not because they are not valuable, but because most people do not discover them until later in the process.

Bottom line: this is not about one right answer. It is about timing, comfort, and knowing your options before you need them.

Thanks for voting and keep those poll ideas coming — hit reply if you’ve got a fun one!

Villages History

🏠 Villages Homes: Then vs Now

Part 1: Smaller, Simpler, and Built for a Different Retiree

Early homes in The Villages were designed for a very specific retiree profile: slower pace, fewer guests, less stuff.

Floor plans were compact. Guest bedrooms were smaller. Garages fit cars — not golf carts and storage and a workshop. Open concepts weren’t the priority. Efficiency was.

These homes made sense at the time. Many early residents were downsizing hard, escaping cold climates, and focused on affordability and ease of maintenance. The idea of frequent visitors, home offices, or large entertaining spaces wasn’t baked into the design.

Lanais existed, but they weren’t the centerpiece they’d later become. Outdoor living was a bonus, not the star.

In short: early Villages homes were practical, intentional, and modest — perfectly matched to how residents lived then.

But lifestyles change. And so did expectations.

🩺Screening Spotlight

Sponsored By Life Line Screening

Villages Pulse Reader Elizabeth shared this with me recently: I did not see your poll on carotid artery screening but everyone should do it. I did and it saved my life. I had 97% blockage. Just saying it can make all difference. That was in 2013!!!

🩸 Screening Spotlight: Blood Glucose & A1C Check

A simple blood test can tell you a lot. A blood glucose and A1C screening shows how your blood sugar is behaving right now — and how it’s been trending over the last 2–3 months. It’s one of the easiest ways to catch prediabetes early or stay ahead of type 2 diabetes before symptoms ever show up.

Quick. No guesswork. Just clear numbers you can act on.
