Plus: Dance Like No One's Watching

🌅 Good Morning, Villages. A rainy start to the weekend gave way to some beautiful weather, especially that cool Sunday morning! Doubt we’ll feel that chill again until November. Welcome to a new week of fun events and music galore throughout the Villages and surrounding areas. Grab some napkins, it’s National Rotisserie Chicken Day. And just 90 years ago today, Babe Ruth announced his retirement.

Pet Poll Results

Last Thursday’s Pet Poll had no surprises. Villagers love their pets, dogs in particular, but cat lovers were well represented as well. Here’s the final tally:

Have Dog(s)

49%

Have Cat(s)

11%

Have Dog(s) and Cat(s)

11%

No Pets

29 %

From the poll comments, it’s clear that we love our pets, and they rule the roost. And those that don’t have pets say they get to travel worry free and spontaneously. Given the cost of pet sitting around here, they may be on to something!

Maybe a pet of the month feature is in our future here at Villages Pulse? Hit reply to this email and attach a photo of your furry friend. If we get enough I’ll select one randomly to post. That’s my boy Bailey in front of the Colosseum in Rome when he was one. Now he’s 14, short hair, almost blind, and 100% toothless.

Beach Day Trip Recommendation

Now that the summer heat is back, some of our readers have been asking about beach day trips. Today’s recommendation for an easy (but still long) drive to a relaxing beach day from the Villages is Daytona Shores Beach. It’s much more laid back than Daytona Beach, especially on a weekday, which is when I recommend you go. This one is for those that don’t want to drive on the beach and pay big bucks to get towed when stuck in the sand. It’s been my personal go to for 7 or 8 years now. It used to include free beach-side parking. Then they enlarged and improved the parking, and added restrooms / changerooms / showers and a picnic area.

As of Jan 1, 2025, they charge $20/day for parking. Still worth it to me for the convenience and amenities. Here’s the easiest route ( google maps doesn’t suggest this option, but I think it’s the fastest option):

You take 42 to Deland, then 44 to I95 North, take exit 256 for FL 421/Dunlawton Ave. Turn right on S. Atlantic Ave. and Dahlia Avenue Park Parking lot is about a third of a mile on left. For the Starbucks fan, there is a store on the right just after you cross the bridge at S. Peninsula Drive, one block before the ocean. So grab some coffee and treats and enjoy the day in the sand and surf!
