Scammers beware: The Villages is onto you

Plus: The decluttering shortcut you didn't know you needed

Good Thursday morning. Your fellow Villagers sent scammers packing — and the comments were gold. Plus, a surprisingly practical AI use that might help you reclaim a closet (or a garage, or a spare bedroom). Let's get into it.

Monday’s Poll Recap

🎣 The Villages vs. The Scammers — and It's Not Even Close

526 votes came in — and the verdict is clear: this community is not easy to fool.

✅ The biggest group by far — 291 votes — caught the scam before it could do any damage 🙅 131 of you don't even give them a chance — hang up first, ask questions never 😬 54 were got at least once (and honestly, most of us respect the honesty) 👀 29 came this close — and lived to tell the tale 🤔 21 aren't even sure — which might be the most unsettling answer of all

But here's what the comments revealed — the scams hitting our community right now…

👉 The "your Amazon order has a problem" text — complete with a link. One reader caught it only because she doesn't even have an Amazon account 😂

👉 The fake bank call — slow, friendly, totally convincing. One reader said the guy from "Chase Fraud" was so smooth and conversational, she didn't catch on until he asked for her ID

👉 The jury duty fine — a local area code calls saying you missed jury duty and owe $9,000. Chilling… until you hang up

👉 The grandkid in trouble scam — multiple readers mentioned in-laws and co-workers who fell for it. "Grandma, I'm in jail, don't tell Mom…"

👉 The unpaid toll bill — at least one reader got that one; a friend did too

👉 The real estate wire fraud — one reader got an email, on closing day, from what looked exactly like their title company, asking them to wire all closing funds immediately. "The best phishing attempt I've ever seen." They didn't bite — barely

The defense strategies our readers swear by…

🛡️ Don't answer numbers you don't recognize — by far the most common rule 🛡️ If it seems legit, go directly to the app or website — never click the link 🛡️ One reader's husband strings the scammers along until they curse him out. We respect this 🛡️ "I learned my lesson the expensive way when we first moved here" — more than a few of you said some version of this

The standout comment of the week…

"These attacks will only improve as AI continues to evolve. We are all susceptible — it is crucial that we not shame one another."

That one landed. No judgment here. These scams are getting harder to spot, not easier.

Thanks for voting and keep those poll ideas coming — hit reply if you’ve got a fun one!

🛡️ How to Stay One Step Ahead of Scammers

They're getting smarter. AI-generated voices, spoofed caller IDs, near-perfect fake emails — the days of obvious "Nigerian prince" scams are long gone. Here's what actually works right now:

Don't answer. Don't click. Don't engage. Let unknown calls go to voicemail. Legitimate callers leave messages. If you get a text or email with a link — even from a familiar brand — go directly to the website or app instead of tapping the link.

When in doubt, hang up and call back. If someone claims to be your bank, Medicare, or Amazon — hang up and call the official number yourself. Scammers count on you staying on the line with them.

Wire transfers and gift cards are always a red flag. No legitimate business, government agency, or family member in trouble will ask you to pay via wire transfer or gift cards. Full stop.

Watch for urgency and secrecy. Phrases like "act now," "don't tell anyone," or "your account will be closed" are pressure tactics designed to short-circuit your instincts. Slow down. That's your superpower.

Trust your gut — then verify. If something feels off, it probably is. Call a family member, check the official website, or walk into your bank branch. Scammers hate when you take your time.

The best defense isn't technology — it's a two-second pause before you react.

Florida residents, take note: Florida consistently ranks among the top states for elder fraud — reporting more than 9,000 cases in 2023 alone, resulting in losses exceeding $335 million. And it's getting worse: the FTC reports more than $258 million stolen from Floridians 50 and over just in 2025. Florida Sheriffs AssociationCBS News

🎟️ AI for Everyday Life

Finally Tackle That Closet — With a Little Help From AI"

We all have one. The spare room that became a storage room. The garage shelves full of "I might need that someday." The closet with clothes from three sizes and two decades ago. Decluttering sounds simple until you're standing there holding a bread maker you haven't touched since 2009.

AI won't judge you. And it's surprisingly good at helping you make decisions you've been putting off for years.

Try this prompt:

"I'm trying to declutter my [room — garage, master closet, spare bedroom, kitchen]. I tend to hold onto things for sentimental reasons and I'm not sure what's worth donating vs. tossing vs. selling. Ask me questions about what I'm finding and help me decide what to do with each item."

AI will walk you through it category by category — asking the right questions, like when you last used it, whether someone else could use it, and whether you'd buy it again today. It won't let you off the hook with "maybe someday."

You can also ask it:

🏷️ "What items from a Florida retirement home sell well on Facebook Marketplace?" 📦 "What do Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity actually accept?" 🗓️ "Help me make a one-room-per-week decluttering schedule I can actually stick to."

The hardest part of decluttering isn't the hauling — it's the deciding. AI gives you a patient, no-pressure sounding board that's available at 7am before the heat kicks in.

Bonus tip: Most AI tools let you upload a photo directly. Snap a picture of a cluttered shelf or garage corner and ask: "What do you see here that's worth selling, and what should I realistically charge?" AI will scan the image and suggest what to list on Facebook Marketplace, what belongs at a yard sale, and what to just donate — with price ranges for each.

One room. One hour. Start this week.
