The Villages Diet Plan is working perfectly

Eat out. Repeat. Don’t ask questions. Music and Events inside.

Apparently, retirement isn’t saving anyone money—it’s just reallocating it… mostly to restaurants and Amazon boxes. The poll results didn’t even try to hide it.

📅 On this day in 1513 — Juan Ponce de León landed in Florida searching for the Fountain of Youth. Legend says he never found it… although St. Augustine would strongly disagree—and happily charge you admission to see where it definitely, totally exists. 😄

Monday’s Poll Recap

🍽️ The Villages Diet Plan: Eat Out, Repeat

662 votes in… and let’s not kid ourselves: Retirement didn’t kill spending — it just changed where it happens. Dining out ran away with it (332 votes)… and the comments basically said: “Yeah… and it’s not slowing down anytime soon.”

Here’s the real story behind those numbers:

🍷 Dining out = social life
This wasn’t about food. It’s about:

  • “We’re exhausted after a full day of activities”

  • “It’s how we meet people”

  • “Dinner + the squares = perfect night”

Translation: You’re not paying for the meal — you’re paying for the lifestyle.

📦 Amazon = the silent assassin
170 votes… but honestly, it might be underreported.

Comments summed it up perfectly:

  • “It’s just so easy…”

  • “Started during Covid… never stopped”

  • “Every little thing shows up at the door”

That’s not shopping. That’s muscle memory.

🏡 The ‘hidden’ splurge nobody listed
Buried in “Other” and comments:

  • Home upgrades

  • Pool Installs

  • Landscaping

  • Outdoor kitchens

  • Furniture

Basically: “We moved here… and then kept spending.”

🎶 Life is busier than expected
A bunch of you basically admitted: “We thought we’d cook more… but we’re too busy having fun.” One reader bought a smoker and a grill, now eats out 5 nights a week!

Between shows, classes, day trips, and neighborhood parties…Cooking never stood a chance.

💸 And yes… everyone notices the prices
Recurring theme:

  • “Food is getting expensive”

  • “Drinks are overpriced”

  • “Golf isn’t cheap either”

And yet… no one is stopping.

Bottom line:
You didn’t overspend. You upgraded your life… and your credit card came along for the ride.

Thanks for voting and keep those poll ideas coming — hit reply if you’ve got a fun one!

If you’re not following Don Wiley’s monthly construction updates, you’re missing one of the most watched features in The Villages. This month: a new county service center with a 4-story fire tower, Middleton Publix going vertical, two new exec courses already in play, major progress across CDD 16 and LaGrange/Lake View/Farmstead/Long Prairie — and yes, a Twistee Treat on 466A. Buckle up. 🎬

💪 AI for Everyday Life

Stop Overpaying for Travel

This one came straight from readers. A lot of you said the same thing: “I feel like I’m overpaying for flights and cruises… but I don’t know how to tell.” You’re not wrong. Prices change constantly, and the exact same trip can vary by hundreds—sometimes thousands—depending on timing, booking site, and hidden perks. This is where AI quietly saves you real money.

Next time you’re looking at a trip, paste the details in and ask: “Is this a good deal compared to typical pricing?” Include your dates, departure city, airline or cruise line, seat or cabin type, and the price you’re seeing. In seconds, AI can tell you if the price is high, average, or a deal, suggest better dates (even shifting a few days can make a big difference), flag cheaper routes or booking options, and point out hidden value like onboard credits, free drinks, or baggage fees included.

Try these (copy/paste and fill in the blanks):

  • “Compare this flight: [City → City], [dates], [airline], $[price]. Is this a good deal? Show cheaper date options within ±3 days.”

  • “Compare this cruise: [cruise line + ship], [dates], [itinerary], balcony cabin, $[price]. Are there cheaper weeks or better promos right now?”

  • “Find me the best value flight from [your airport] to [destination] in [month]. I prefer nonstop and mid-day departures.”

  • “What’s the cheapest time in the next 3 months to take this exact trip?”

  • “Are there bundles, credits, or perks included with this price that I might be missing?”

Quick tip: tell AI how you like to travel. If you prefer nonstop flights, mid-day departures, or quieter cruises, say it. The more context you give, the better the recommendations.

Bottom line: if you’re not checking prices with AI before booking, you’re probably overpaying—and that’s money better spent on your next trip.

Met a reader last week delivering a couple of the Sharper Image compression boots (BTW, limited supply of boots remain) — great lady, and before I could get back to my car she had a question for me: "Kevin, do you think anyone else out here rides side by sides, or, am I the only redneck in The Villages?"

Challenge accepted. Let's find out. 👇 If we get some yes’s I’ll connect you guys.
