The Retirement Expense Nobody Warned You About (Hint: It's In Your Mouth)

Plus: The cortisol spiral keeping you up — and how to stop it

Happy Monday, Villagers! This week we're tackling two things that quietly drain your retirement: your dental bill and your sleep. One costs you money, the other costs you sanity — and somehow Medicare doesn't cover either. We've also got a gorgeous golf course home in Palo Alto worth a Tuesday afternoon, live music all week long, and your weekly dose of "wait, that's actually really useful." Let's get into it.

🗓️ On this day in 1949, George Orwell published Nineteen Eighty-Four — a novel about government surveillance, thought control, and nonstop bad news. Basically the world's first doom-scrolling warning.

Poll of The Week

Still Rocking Your Original Teeth? 🦷

Let's talk about the silent budget killer nobody warned you about in retirement: dental care.

A single implant in the Villages area? Easily $4,000 to $6,000. A full crown? $1,500 on a good day. And somehow none of it is covered by Medicare. It's basically a second mortgage, one tooth at a time.

Yet here we are — smiling through it. Literally.

Pulse Sleep Series

😰 The Stress & Doom Spiral That's Wrecking Your Sleep

You got into bed fine. Then your brain started.

Tomorrow's appointment. That news headline you saw at 9pm. The thing you said in 2019. Next thing you know, it's 1am and you're wide awake, heart quietly racing.

This isn't just "overthinking." There's real biology behind it.

Stress triggers cortisol — your body's alarm hormone. Cortisol is supposed to peak in the morning to wake you up and drop low by midnight. But chronic stress, anxiety, or an evening of bad news can spike it right when it should be fading. A body running on cortisol at midnight isn't going to sleep anytime soon.

Doom scrolling makes it dramatically worse. Every alarming headline triggers a small fight-or-flight response. Your amygdala — your brain's threat detector — can't tell the difference between a bear and a news alert. Each swipe keeps cortisol elevated and melatonin suppressed. Sixty-five percent of people who scroll regularly say it leaves them more stressed, not less.

The spiral is self-reinforcing. Stress disrupts sleep. Poor sleep raises cortisol the next day. More cortisol means more nighttime anxiety. Repeat.

How to break it:

📵 Hard stop on news and social media one hour before bed — non-negotiable 📝 "Worry dump" — write tomorrow's concerns on paper before lights out, then close the notebook 🌬️ Box breathing (4 counts in, hold, out, hold) activates your parasympathetic nervous system within minutes 🧠 If nighttime anxiety is persistent, CBT-I (covered in last Monday) directly targets this cycle
